Replacing a tooth, planned in 3D.
Dr. Ihns uses 3D CBCT imaging and a digital planning workflow to map out your implant before treatment begins, so placement is guided by a careful plan.
- A clear 3D view. CBCT imaging shows your bone, nerves and sinuses in three dimensions, which helps with careful planning.
- Planned before placement. Your implant position is planned digitally with your final tooth in mind.
- Guided placement. Where appropriate, a custom surgical guide made from your plan helps direct the implant to the planned position.
- You see the plan, too. Dr. Ihns shows you your 3D images and explains each step.
How it works
- Consultation. Dr. Ihns examines your mouth, reviews your health history and talks with you about your goals and all of your tooth-replacement options.
- 3D CBCT scan. A quick, open scan creates a 3D image of your jaw. You don't have to lie in a tube.
- Digital scan and planning. A digital scan of your teeth is combined with your 3D images. Dr. Ihns then plans the implant position on screen, with your future crown in mind.
- Surgical guide (when appropriate). A custom guide is made from your digital plan to help direct placement.
- Implant placement. The area is frozen, and the implant is placed following the plan. Dr. Ihns will go over comfort options with you ahead of time.
- Healing. Over the next several months, the implant bonds with your jawbone. Dr. Ihns will tell you what to expect and how to care for the area.
- Your new tooth. Once healing is complete, your custom crown (or other restoration) is attached.
Who it's for
Implants may be an option if you:
- Are missing one or more teeth
- Have a tooth that needs to be removed
- Find a removable denture or bridge uncomfortable, or would like an alternative to one
- Are in good general health, with enough bone to support an implant (or are open to bone grafting if needed)
Implants aren't right for everyone. Some health conditions, medications and habits like smoking can affect healing. Dr. Ihns will go over your health history carefully, explain other options such as bridges or dentures, and refer you elsewhere if that's in your best interest.
FAQs
What is a CBCT scan, and is it safe?
CBCT (cone beam computed tomography) is a type of dental X-ray that creates a 3D image. It uses slightly more radiation than a standard dental X-ray, so Dr. Ihns only recommends it when it will help with your diagnosis or planning, and uses settings suited to what's needed. Let us know if you're pregnant or might be.
Does getting an implant hurt?
The area is thoroughly frozen during placement, so you should feel pressure but not pain. Some tenderness and swelling afterwards is common for a few days, and Dr. Ihns will give you aftercare instructions.
How long does the whole process take?
It varies. Healing usually takes a few months before the final tooth is placed, and some people need extra steps, like an extraction or bone graft, first. Dr. Ihns will give you an estimated timeline at your consultation.
Does 3D planning mean my implant will succeed?
3D planning and guided placement help Dr. Ihns plan carefully, but no treatment can be guaranteed. Implant success also depends on healing, your overall health, and keeping up with home care and regular checkups.
How much do implants cost?
Cost depends on how many teeth are being replaced and whether any extra steps are needed. You'll get a detailed estimate before treatment. [Placeholder: Looking into outside financing with Lendcare.]
How do I care for an implant?
Brush and floss it just like a natural tooth, and keep up with your regular checkups and cleanings.
